Taking Medicines Out of the UK

An NHS patient travelling abroad may ask their surgery for a FP10 repeat prescription to cover their time abroad. This is at the discretion of the surgery but can be for no longer than 3 months. This will give the patient enough medication to last until they can make arrangements for supply in the country they are visiting. The Department of Health recommends that the period for which prescriptions should be issued is best decided by the patient’s GP, taking into account his detailed knowledge of the patient’s medical history and current condition. When a doctor prescribes a drug he is clinically and legally responsible for any results of that decision to prescribe. In view of this it is not considered good clinical practice to prescribe large amounts of medicines to a patient going abroad for an extended period of time, whose progress the GP is not able to monitor.

GMS and PMS regulations state that the PCT shall remove a patient from the doctor's list where a patient intends to be away from the UK for a period of 3 mths, or has been absent from the UK for 3 or more months. It follows that prescriptions should not be issued for longer than 3 months, at which time the practice is deemed no longer responsible for providing patient care. This does not preclude re-registering patients on their return, or treating them as Temporary residents for emergency treatment if they visit the UK.

Repeat Prescriptions

Your prescription request will be ready for collection 3:00pm onwards, two days after you have requested it. In order that you do not run out of your medication please ensure that you order your prescription in time.

It is important that you take the medication as prescribed by your doctor. Some patients on long-term treatment will be issued with a computer slip.

This is how to use it: -

When you have about one week’s supply left fill in the slip by ticking those items you require.
Post the slip to the surgery with a stamped addresses envelope or deliver it in person. We do not take requests for repeat prescriptions over the telephone, but we do accept faxed requests.
Please allow 2 working days, then collect your slip and prescription after 3pm. If there is any doubt about your request, or if your condition is one that requires review, the doctor may ask to see you to review your treatment.
It is now possible to fax through your repeat prescription requests, allowing 24 hours notice. Our fax number is : 01625 575650

DON’T LEAVE TABLETS OR MEDICINES LYING AROUND. RETURN ANY SURPLUS TO YOUR LOCAL CHEMIST.

Prescriptions Charges and Exemptions

Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).

The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.

NHS charges

From 1 April 2009, the charges are:

Prescription (per item): £7.20
12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £104.00
3-month PPC: £28.25

If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months, or more than 14 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC. The charge for a single prescription item is £7.20, whereas a three month PPC will cost you £28.25 and a 12 month PPC £104.00.
